The expertly designed PS5 exclusive plays like an intervention with its own publisher. It brings the PlayStation platform on an intergalactic journey through its history to rediscover its long lost sense of wonder. It’s not just a very effective ad for Sony; it’s an exuberant adventure that remembers that there’s power in play. At one time, this was a fundamental video game experience; a 3D platformer was just about the coolest game you could have. These were tightly designed adventures that understood the ways that digital play could activate creativity, even through a silly little cartoon with nothing to say.

Astro Bot

Bursting to the seams with charm, Astro Bot is an inventive, nostalgia-fuelled platformer of the highest order. Astro Bot also doubles as a celebration of all things PlayStation. You’ll meet little robots themed around other PlayStation heroes and heroines, including Ratchet, Rivet, Kratos, Atreus, Aloy, Nathan Drake, Sly Cooper, Jak, Crash Bandicoot, and many more. Some of the levels are even themed around different franchises and implement mechanics from those games.

At your base, you can also use coins in a vending machine to unlock items for these themed bots, giving them little motifs that you can interact with. They, like in Robots Rescue and Astro Bot Rescue Mission, are scattered across the game’s levels and have to be rescued by their captain. In the story of the game, the Alien returns (now named Space Bully Nebulax), and scatters the Bots across the galaxy by stealing their ship’s CPU, causing the ship to break down and eject the Bots from it. Funky Fungi Overview

It’s clear from the very first frame of Astro Bot just how much love and reverence Team Asobi has for the history of Sony’s consoles and their library of games. You choose a new save file by selecting one of three original PlayStation memory cards and are then thrust into a scene taking place on your PS5-shaped mothership. That mothership crash lands on a desert planet after an evil alien attack, and Astro must now travel the galaxy searching for its missing parts and crewmates.

What Are All Special Bots In Astro Bot? Francis Drake – False Ancestor

Sure, some are coated in different colours of paint or dressed to fit in with their surroundings, but they are all vanquished via the same few fundamental jump and hit combos. Later on, though, the design book opens up and introduces some of my favourite foes. These include an anthropomorphic playing card that flings a hand of clubs and spades your way, which you can then jump on to make your way towards the enemy to deal a killing blow of your own. Here are the games released during 2025 that have won major industry awards or received nominations for those awards.

You can probably imagine what these are already, with the God Of War one giving you Kratos’ ice axe and the Uncharted one having Nate shooting what looks like foam balls at enemies. It’s easily better than any of the Ratchet & Clank games and, apart from Nintendo, its only real rival is PlayStation VR predecessor Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Although this game could be construed as a sequel to that and certainly shares many similar sequences and characters. It also features dozens of characters from first and third party PlayStation games from throughout the decades – although the way they’re handled is one of the game’s few failings. After the disaster of Concord comes the triumph of Sony’s Astro Bot, with a new single-player classic that is one of the best 3D platformers ever made.

This is one of the only PS5 games that really feels like it was built around the DualSense, and it shows. Astro Bot really is the video game equivalent of venturing through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory; a delightful concoction of experimentation and joy, just without the child endangerment. Chocolate death pipes and fizzy lifting drinks are instead swapped out for sinkholes leading to treasure and an inflatable friend who helps you reach floating platforms. These five new levels, available to ASTRO BOT players at no additional cost, will truly test your jumping skills.

It is the 5th game in the Astro Bot series, released after Astro’s Playroom (2020). We’ve discussed that in a separate boxout, because none of that affects the game, but it is all very odd – and gives the distinct impression it was shoehorned in halfway through development. There are much more difficult optional levels – a set based around the face button symbols being the hardest – but these are all quite short and completely linear, with no checkpoints. They’re reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine void levels but it’s a shame none of the normal levels also offer an increased challenge. Graphics aren’t the only presentational element that can elevate a game, and Astro Bot proves that perfectly, but in gameplay terms the most interesting ideas are the many and varied power-ups. Some are fairly straightforward, like the bulldog rocket that shoots you horizontally forward and can damage objects, while a rooster one can shoot you vertically in the air, which is used to pull objects out of the ground.

What are you going to play a adult copy and paste game part whatever. I’d say your only potential hurdle is some of the challenges, as they can be quite tough, but broadly speaking the game is on the easy side. @RubyCarbuncle Oh I don’t doubt there’s an audience for VR, I just don’t see Sony alloting much time or resources to it for their new golden child (Asobi) with this sort of success on the vanilla console under their belts. I never thought i see the day push square giving a ps game a 10 score .. Digital Foundry just dropped their Astrobot video, I haven’t had a chance to watch yet but I think the title says it all.

There are 195 hidden cameo characters in Astro Bot’s dozens of levels, and part of the fun is tracking them all down. As I journeyed through Astro Bot’s gorgeous worlds, I was constantly blown away by the clever new hook each level introduced. While a traditional 3D platformer collect-a-thon at its core, Astro Bot is always throwing in a new gimmick to make each level feel fresh and distinct from all the others. Oftentimes, these gimmicks add a new exploration tool, in turn giving the developers the freedom to build levels in completely different ways. The sheer variety Astro Bot delivers is breathtaking, and like I said, there’s not a bad level in the bunch. Astro Bot is quite literally this year’s best game yet, and it being a single-player platformer makes it all the more special.

The next step is to unlock the Rolling Star Gatcha Collectible from the Gatcha Lab. If you give Kratos Bot a friendly punch at your Crash Site, he’ll use his axe to freeze you into an ice cube. Well, to unlock the “Thaw, God of Thunder!” trophy in Astro Bot, you need to trick Kratos Bot into freezing Thor Bot instead.
